Water transport strike causes sufferings to launch passengers in S. region

Water transport strike to press home 11 -point demands of the workers starts from early Saturday and ended yesterday caused sufferings to people in riverine southern region.
In Barishal, operations of all kinds of passenger and cargo carrying water transports on all river routes including major routes connecting different points of Barishal, Bhola,Patuakhali, Barguna, Jhalakathi, Pirojpur districts and capital city Dhaka, were halted due to the strike.
Bangladesh Noujan Sramik Federation (BNSF) called this strike throughout the country to press home their 11-pont demands related with security, safety, salary and other issues.
Water transport workers said their demands included implementation of tri-party contract signed in 2016 between government, transport owners and transport workers, introduce appointment letters, issuing service book for workers, 10 lakhs taka compensation after died during on duty working, increasing social safety nets, issuing landing pass for transport workers going to India, set up navigation markings of the river routes, curbing piracy, toll collection etc.
Sheikh Abul Hashem, president of Noujan Sramik Federation, Barishal unit said no water transport has been plied from Barisal port from early Saturday (Friday midnight) and they will continue their strike till the realizations of their legitimate demands.
Shahe Alam Bhuiyan, president of BNSF said they yet not receive any response from water transport owners about fulfilling their legitimate demands.
