M M Jasim :Torrential rain created severe water-logging in different parts of Dhaka city on Friday afternoon due to the unplanned and poor drainage system. As a result, sufferings of the city residents knew no bounds. Parts of Shenpara Parbata, Kazipara, Gulistan, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Manikdi Bazar, Merul Badda, Shajahanpur, Fakirerpool, Motijheel, Rajarbagh, Rampura, Badda, Moghbazar, Tejturi Bazar and Tikatuli and some other low-lying areas are most affected.KM Das Lane of Tikatuli went under knee-deep water, as there was no way to pump out water. For this, the movement of cars and rickshaws, children and old was restricted to avoid sufferings.”The residents of the KM Das Lane do not know when they will be free from the sting of the water-logging,” said Abbas Uddin, a resident. The condition of the road is dangerous. My school-going son refused to wade through the unhealthy water. Water logging is a big problem of this area, he said. “I couldn’t come out from my home as there was knee-deep water in front of my house on Friday. I cannot understand when we shall be free from water-logging,” said Suman Miah, a resident of Tajmahal Road in Mohammadpur.Asked about the water-logging situation in the city, Engineer A K M Shahid Uddin of Dhaka WASA said, “I myself was confined in my residence at Jigatola for a several hours due to water-logging in the area.” It will take time to modernize the city’s drainage system, he said.Some 20mm of rainfall was recorded by the Met Office at Agargaon till 6:00 on Friday, an observer at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department told The New Nation.
