Water level of Jamuna increasing again in Tangail

Due to the hill slopes from the upstream and continuous rains, the water level of the Jamuna in Tangail is increasing again in the fourth phase. As a result of farmers of Gabsara, Arjuna, Nikrail and Gobindasi Char areas of Bhuapur Upazila are worried about the cultivation of various Rabi crops. Due to this, the farmers are refraining themselves from planting various vegetables including maize, sweet potato and oil seeds. Meanwhile, due to rise of water level, erosion has already started in Char areas demolishing huge crops lands.
Visiting on ground, several farmers and local said that many chars have sprung up as the river water has dried up over the past few months. For this reason to ensure advance cultivation, we have started farming considering it as an opportunity to get bumper yield. But suddenly, the water in the Jamuna is rising for two or three days. Seeing the increase in water, we are not planting various rabi crops and vegetable seeds now. We will start farming after seeing the total situation.
In this regard, Upazila Agricultural Officer Agriculturist Dr. Humayun Kabir said that at present, the farmers were preparing crops such as corn, sweet potato, oil seeds and vegetables in char areas. But the water level of Jamuna in increasing suddenly. For this, they refrain themselves from planting any types of seeds understanding the situation of water increase.
Regarding the increase in water, Sajjad Hossain, Executive Engineer of District Water Development Board said that the water level in the Jamuna River has been increasing for the past few days. From the morning of Saturday, water is flowing below the danger line at Porabari point of Jamuna River marking 226 cm. There is no possibility of major flood. Apart from this, the processes of geo-filling in the erosion-affected areas are ongoing for the sake of local inhabitants, he also added.
