Bagerhat Correspondent :
Lobster cultivators of Fakirhat Upazila in Bagerhat district cannot harvest good production for want of quality and healthy fries of lobsters for the last few years.
At present the collection of natural produced lobster fires from the rivers and the sea is strictly prohibited.
On the other hand, .lobster fries produced in Government hatcheries cannot meet the growing demand of the lobster cultivators. So, the (lobster) cultivators now solely depend on inferior, unhealthy and substandard quality fries of lobsters produced in the private hatcheries.
The cultivators of lobsters cannot produce quality lobsters in their fish farms and ultimately they are incurring heavy loss every year. It may be mentioned here that maximum quantities of lobsters are cultivated in Fakirhat, Mollahat, Chitalmari and Rampal Upazilas in Bagerhat district.
It is reported that 3.5 cr. lobster fries are being cultivated in 7 thousand 9 hundred fish farms in Fakirhat Upazila in the current season and as many as 8 thousand lobster farmers are associated with the lobster cultivation.
According to the lobster cultivators, naturally produced lobster fries are capable to resist the diseases and they can live long and their production cost is reasonable and the market price of them (grown up lobsters) is higher than that of the lobster products based on hatcheries.
Humyun Kabir, a lobster cultivator of Town Noapara village in Fakirhat Upazla told this correspondent, every year the lobster cultivators are incurring loss as a number of dishonest hatchery owners are selling their produced fries to the cultivators in the name of naturally produced fries and when the cultivators release the artificially produced lobster fries in the fish farms they cannot adjust with the new water and new environment and die in large scale. More over, in the winter season they cannot cope with the temperature and die.
Faltita of Fakirhat Upazila is the biggest lobster market in Bagerhat district. Prokesh Biswas, a lobster cultivator and also a lobster trader of the market disclosed, cultivation of naturally produced lobster fries in the fish farm is undoubtedly profitable.
But it is very difficult to manage naturally produced fries. He suggested, if the naturally produced lobster fries are collected in a planned way from the rivers and sea lobster cultivation will be increased, it will be more profitable and it will earn more foreign currencies.
Md. Iftekjharul Islam, Senor Fishery Officer of Fakirhat Upazila told the newsmen, at the time of collection of naturally produced lobster fires from the rivers and the sea innumerable fish fires of other species are destroyed.
