Voter list updating in city begins today

UNB, Dhaka :The Election Commission (EC) is set to start updating the voter list in the capital city, including the cantonment Board on Monday.Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said this at a press briefing at the EC Media Centre here on Sunday.He said enumerators will go for door-to-door data collection till September 10, while the photographs and fingerprints of possible voters will be taken in each voter registration centre from September 18.If any possible voter fails to fill up the voter registration form during the door-to-door data collection, he or she can go to the registration centre and can get registered there.The enumerators will leave their contact numbers and addresses at the houses that will be found under lock and key during their visit so that the possible voters can take necessary steps for being voters, Kazi Rakibuddin said.The possible voters can also get their names registered as voters on weekly holiday (Friday), Rakibuddin said.The CEC said the commission has estimated that there will be a five percent growth in the number of voters in the city on completion of the updating exercise.Bangladeshi citizens who will turn 18 on or before January 1, 2015 and the eligible Bangladeshis who missed the current roll will be included in the new voter list.Currently, according to the EC, there are over 51 lakh voters in Dhaka metropolitan area, including the cantonment board and 17 union parishads.Of the voters, 22,88,387 are in Dhaka North City Corporation, 18,07,285 voters in Dhaka South City Corporation and 62428 at Dhaka Cantonment Board.In the 17 union parishads, field-level data have already been collected from August 21 to 30.The updated voter list will be made effective in 2015 on completion of the necessary procedures like publication of draft rolls to receive public complaints.On May 15, 2014, the commission started the three-phase countrywide voter list updating with an estimation of finding 46 lakh fresh voters.The commission has so far collected data of more than 41 lakh possible voters, sources at the Commission said.
