BSS, Dhaka :
Danish healthcare giant Novo Nordisk wants to provide better healthcare service to Bangladesh and build awareness to change people’s behavior on diabetes for healthier, longer and more productive lives.
“Bangladesh is very important for us and we want to change diabetes through creating awareness,” Susanne Stormer, Vice President, Corporate Sustainability, Novo Nordisk said here today at a press conference.
Suannne also the Chief Sustainability Officer of the company is now visiting Bangladesh said their mission is to protect the people from harm of diabetes as it is now growing significantly.
“By providing better treatment, raising awareness and advocating for earlier diagnosis and improved health outcomes, we want to enable people with chronic conditions to live healthier, longer and more productive lives,” she added.
There were 5.9 million cases of diabetes in Bangladesh in 2014, according to data of the International Diabetes Federation South-East Asia. The figure is expected to be doubled by 2030. A total of 1,11,371 people died of diabetes last year, it added.
In the sustainability report 2014 of Novo Nordisk, the company specifically addressed the linkage between cities and the rise of diabetes. People are moving to cities for economic opportunity and to be a part of what is happening, but at the same time statistics show that their health conditions tend to suffer as a result. It really challenges sustainable development.
“We would like to see economic growth, of course, but if it comes at a cost to people’s health, it’s a dilemma. So, we have started addressing what we call ‘urban diabetes, and I believe we are the first to try and tackle it,” added Suannne.
She said a healthy economy, environment and society are fundamentals to long-term business success.
“Novo Nordisk manages its business in accordance with the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) business principle and pursue business solutions that maximize value to our stakeholders”, said Susanne.
Triple Bottom Line business principle means any decision should always seek to combine three considerations: Is it financially, socially and environmentally responsible?
“Novo Nordisk is doing business in a responsible and sustainable way, with a focus on improving public health, benefits patients, society and shareholders”, Suannne said.
