Volunteers’ role stressed to tackle urban disasters

Aiming to develop capacity of urban community volunteers for effectively participation in rescue operations during urban disasters, a training workshop of the volunteers concluded in the city.  
Fire Service and Civil Defence Department recently organised the training workshop.
A total of 50 volunteers from ward No. 34 took part in the basic training on ‘Search and Rescue, Fire Fighting and First Aid’ at Fire Service and Civil Defence Training Complex, Mirpur-10.
Stressing on the role of the volunteers for ensuring a safe city, the speakers said volunteers can be a part of urban resilience system. “Since we do not have adequate manpower to fight the ever-growing risks of urban disasters such as earthquake, fire and building collapse, volunteers can be a great help in addressing this gap”.
They called for enhancing disaster management system for protecting the lives and properties.
Terming Bangladesh as a disaster prone country, they said such training can play an important role in strengthening urban resilience.
The programme was told that the government decided to raise 62,000 urban volunteers. Of them, 44,000 have already been raised.
Community Participation and Development (CPD) supported by Save the Children, European Union Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection, organized the proramme under Sustainable Urban Resilience Project (SURP)-II.  
Moazzem Hossain, Additional Secretary of Disaster Management and Relief Ministry, attended as the chief guest.
