Visually challenged wants Babul’s death penalty

Over two hundred visually challenged people on Tuesday staged demonstration in Gazipur district, demanding death sentence to Jamuna Group’s Chairman Nurul Islam Babul who allegedly built a wine factory occupying their land and killing three blind people.
Gazipur Ondho Kalyan Samity (GOKS) and Pratibandhi Somaj Kalyan Punorbashan Society (PSKPS) staged the demonstration in front of deputy commissioner’s (DC) office of the district at around 11:30am.
The destitute people also brought protest procession with a banner that reads ‘Want death sentence to Babul’ ‘Give our land back’.
Roaming the DC office, the people took position on the road near the office and blockaded it for15 minutes.
On information, some police members rushed there and managed them put off the blockade.
During the demonstration, Shajuddin, President of PSKPS, said “We built a village titled ‘Ondhertek’ after taking 14 bighas of land from Safipur Forest Department of Gazipur district in 2002.”
Throwing curse on Babul, he also said “On the day of occupying the land, Babul’s rented goons tried to kill us by truck.”
He also informed “A total of 45 families were living in the Ondhertek. But Babul grabbed the total land, killing three blind people, including Barek and Selim.”
“Occupying the land, Babul established a wine factory named ‘Hunter Crown’ there,” he also said.
Another visually challenged Moslem Talukdar said “Once I had a house at Ondhertek but now I am living in a slum in the Mouchak area in the district.”
Another victim Abbas Uddin said “We formed an organization titled ‘Ondha Kalyan Samity’ in 1985, and got registration from Department of Social Welfare. Thereafter the then deputy commissioner (DC) of the Gazipur district gave us the land according to our demand to make house there.”
He also said “Losing the land, now I am living in a slum at Ershad Nagar in the district town.”
