Teen gangs active on social media: Virtual conflict turns into reality

The threat of teen gang’s culture is increasing in an alarming rate since the corona pandemic thrust the country’s people.
It is learned that this gangs are now forming on internet-based platforms like Facebook and Tiktak.
Many teenagers are involved in virtual conflict on various controversies issues. At one stage it is taking the form of a real conflict.
Trivial things like posts or like-comments are also becoming big issue of violence.
In this situation, the advice of experts is to strengthen the state activities as well as to maintain social and family discipline.
According to the investigation, the area-based ‘teenage gangs’ gather at various parks, open spaces, sidewalks and even in front of educational institutions. In the name of making tick videos, they use obscene gestures, eve teasing, speeding pedestrians, bike drills and other indecent behaviors.
They also make eye-catching gestures in open clothes to get the desired likes and comments on social media.
These gangs are also involved in crimes like theft and robbery. Last month, RAB arrested four members of a teenage gang from city’s Wari.
At the time, the RAB said, the juvenile offenders were involved in drug use, drug dealing, extortion, eve teasing and neighborhood  
group fights in addition to robberies.
In these issues, crime experts say the world is now in the grip of information technology.
Adolescents are taking what they get. They are confusing the place of utilization of technology.
When asked Dr Hafiz Uddin Bhuiyan, Eminent Professor, Institute of Social Welfare & Research of University of Dhaka said, actually there are some causes behind the increasing of juvenile crimes in the society.
Schools, colleges and universities have remained shut due to the countrywide strict lockdown. As a result, students don’t get enough chance to play in and outside the school playground. Finally teenagers are involving in various social media platforms on the name of online classes.
In this case, the responsibility of the parents is not less. Parents need to monitor regularly how much time their children are spending on social media and what they are using their smartphones for. So the guardians are being advised to increase surveillance towards their children, Dr Hafiz added.
When contacted, AFM Kibria, Deputy Commissioner (DC), Cyber Crime Investigation Unit, DMP told the New Nation that our monitoring is on to control the cyber crime. As step already we have made a contract with Tiktak authority so that they can help us providing varios information about the cyber crimes.
Former Chairman of the Department of Criminology, University of Dhaka, Professor Zia Rahman told the media, “We are now in the early stages of modern society. Where various instability is seen to increase. Just like in the United States, a huge gang culture was once formed, which is now happening in Bangladesh. The old rules are becoming ineffective due to social changes. ‘
He further said that the foundations of character that were formed by family, society and educational institutions are being destroyed.
Due to these reasons, huge changes are being noticed even among the youth.
