Members of the village police force on Saturday demanded induction into the national pay scale alongside rations and retirement benefits like other law-enforcement and security agencies of the country.
They voiced their demand through a human chain organized under the banner of Bangladesh Village Police Employees Union (VPEU) at Jatiya Press Club.
Presided by Commander Mostafa Kamal, among others VPEU Adviser Shahjahan Kabir Jahir, President Bhabendra Biswas, and General Secretary Mozammel Haque spoke on the occasion.
Bhabendra Biswas noted that the minimum wage of an employee of the republic is Tk 8200 as per the latest pay scale, yet the total salary of a Mahalladar (a rank of village police) is Tk 1900, while a Dafadar (a commander in VP) earns Tk 2100, something he termed “inhuman and unrealistic”.
Observing that 47, 000 village police are living miserably with their families on this poor income, Adviser Shahjahan Kabir demanded a system of rations immediately and retirement allowances for them.
Speakers also demanded risk allowance, training facilities, welfare funds and village police academies.
