Like other parts of the country, the auspicious Victory Day 2015 has been celebrated in Sylhet city and its adjacent areas through daylong programmes on Wednesday amid huge enthusiasm and festivity.
Scores of political, socio-cultural, volunteer, professional bodies and trade organisations placed wreaths at Sylhet central shaheed minars in Sylhet City. The programmes of the day heralded with 31gun- salute at one-minute past at dawn at the local Police Line Parade Ground.
Chief executive of Sylhet City Corporation placed floral wreaths at Shaheed Minar first followed scores other including leaders of different political parties.
In the early morning, streams of people irrespective of age and sex braving the winter chill and fog thronged into the city streets leading to their nearby Shaheed Minars.
The programmes also included hoisting of the national flag atop all public and private buildings, illumination and decoration of road islands, roadsides, educational institutions and buildings with national flag and colored miniature posters and banners.
District administration organized a colorful march-past at district stadium with participation of police, ansar-VDP, fire service, BNCC, scouts, girls guide, school, college and madrasa students and members of different orphanage, safe home and cultural organizations.
Commissioner of Sylhet division, Jamal uddin Ahmmed accompanied by DIG of Police of Sylhet Range Mizanur Rahman, SMP Commissioner Md Kamrul Ahsan and Deputy Commissioner Joynal Abedin hoisted national flag at the ceremony and took salute of the march-past as the chief guest.
Special prayers were offered at mosques, temples, churches, pagodas and other places of worship. Improved diets were served at hospitals, jails, orphanages and vagabond centers in the district on the occasion.

Chapainawabganj Correspondent adds: Balugram Adarsha College in Chapainawabganj sadar upazila opened a picture gallery of Liberation War on the 44th Victory Day.
Law maker of Chapainawabganj Sadar Constituency Md. Abdul Wadud inaugurated it as Chief Guest. A discussion meeting was also arranged on the occasion.
Among others, secretary general of Jatyo Sahityo Parishad Sirazul Karim, literary personalities of West Bengal of India Dr. Shamol Roy, Dr. Debjani Bhowmik Chakrabarty, Dr. Rittik Chakrabarty, journalist Arup Chandra of West Bengal, Professor Dr. Mazharul Islam Toru, Alhaj Mohammad Mahtab Uddin and vice principal of the college NSM Mahbubur Rahman spoke on the occasion.
Besides, Indians like Professor Abu Sina Biswas, Romi Roy, Irin Parvin and Jharna Roy attended the function.
It was presided over by the principal of the college Md. Saidur Rahman.
The victory day’s programmes started with the gun salutes and offering of the wreaths of flowers at the altar of the monument of the martyred freedom fighters in front of the deputy commissioner’s office and at the mural of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the town.
A grand march past was held at Chapainawabganj stadium. Deputy Commissioner of Chapainawabganj Mohammad Jahangeer Kobir took the salute as chief guest.
Committee of the Concerned Citizens (CCC), Chapainawabganj of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) took out a colourful rally in the town and offered wreaths of flowers at the monument of the martyred freedom fighters.
Exim Bank Agriculture University and Chapainawabganj Government College arranged discussion meetings.
Chapainawabganj district administration arranged a victory fair on the Harimohon Government High School premises. Chapainawabganj District Information Office arranged film show on different development activities of the country on multi-media projector.
The day’s other programmes included discussion meetings and cultural functions, essay and drawing competitions at educational institutions. Different socio-cultural organizations also arranged sports and cultural functions. Besides, improved diet was served at the jail, hospital and government and non-government orphanages.
