Victory Day celebrated in missions abroad

The 46th Victory Day was celebrated in Bangladesh missions abroad on Friday with due solemnity commemorating the supreme sacrifice of millions of people who embraced martyrdom to liberate the country from Pakistani occupation forces following nine-month long bloody war in 1971.
The day’s programmes were begun following hoisting of Bangladesh National Flag at Bangladesh missions abroad, according to message received here on Saturday.
Messages of President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Affairs Minister Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ministry M Shahriar Alam were also read out on the auspicious occasion.
Discussions, cultural functions and reception were also organized at the mission premises in observance of the day. Besides, special prayers were offered seeking eternal peace of the souls of the martyrs of the Liberation War.
Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the UN in New York celebrated the Victory Day in a befitting manner with hoisting of the national flag and playing of the national anthem in the morning.
A discussion was held at Bangabandhu Auditorium in the evening (US time) in which a large number of non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs), including freedom fighters, cultural personalities, political leaders, businessmen and journalists took part.
Charge ‘d Affairs and Deputy Permanent Representative of Bangladesh Permanent Mission to UN Tareq M Ariful Islam delivered a address of welcome while Prime Minister’s Adviser on Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Towfiq-e-Ehahi Chowdhury addressed the function as the main speaker.
Bangladesh Consul General in New York M Shamim Ahsan, US Awami League Acting President M Aktar Hossain, Acting General Secretary Abdul Mukit Chowdhury and freedom fighters Dr. Abdul Baten and Khurshid Anowar Bablu took part in the discussion, among others. The day was also observed in Bangladesh High Commission in London, the United Kingdom, in a befitting manner. Bangladesh High Commissioner to London Md. Nazmul Quaunine inaugurated the day’s progrrame.
Later, a discussion was held at the high commission premises where Chairman n of the Parliamentary standing Committee on the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Suranjit Sengupta joined the discussion as the chief guest.
According to message received here so far Saturday, the Victory Day was also celebrated in Bangladesh missions in Taskent in Uzbekistan, Islamabad in Pakistan and Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Mumbai, India in a befitting manner.
Various programmes including discussions, poetry festival and cultural functions were organized on the occasion.
