Lightning death toll 81: Victim families paid Tk 1.47m so far

Government stated that at least 81 people died in lightning strikes across the country during the spell of thunderstorms on May 12 and 13. In addition, six more died in the nor’wester.
Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya told it in a press conference on Tuesday in his office at Secretariat.
He said, families of the victims received financial support from Relief and
Disaster Management Ministry. He added that, a boat capsized during the same time that left another five persons dead. The government gave a total of Tk 1.47 million as compensation to the victims’ families in 26 districts, said Maya.
According to him, the number of lightning has increased in recent years due to climate change.
“We think that lightning have increased due to climate change. We are scared for increasing number of the causalities in thunderbolt,” Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury said.
Relief and Disaster Management Ministry Secretary Shah Kamal, Additional Secretary Sazzad Kabir and others attended the press conference.
