MM Jasim :
Movement of vessels in the sea and the rivers are being disrupted across the country due to dense fog for the last couple of days.
According to Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the deep fog has limited the vision to as low as 24 meters both in Dhaka and Chittagong cities, causing risky for movement of vessels.
Captain Nazmul Alam, Deputy Traffic Manager of Chittagong Sea Port, said that vessels faced problems to enter the port from the sea on Monday morning due to deep fog in and around the port area.
Container handling at the seaport is also being hampered due to dense fog and chilly weather, port sources informed.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) sources said one ferry at Daulatdia ghat, one in the mid-river and eight ferries in Paturia ghat with several hundred vehicles got stranded, causing sufferings to the passengers.
The queue of vehicles at either side of the river grew until late morning. Four ferries were stranded midway in the night and they resumed their journey around 9:45am on Tuesday, the sources said.
BIWTC’s Aricha Ghat manager Mahiuddin Rasel said movement of ferries as well as other water vessels came to a halt at 5:00am due to
blurred visibility caused by thick fog. Two ferries with a large number of vehicles and passengers were kept anchored at Daulatdia and three ferries at Paturia.
Besides, eight ferries had also come to a halt in the middle of Padma River since 5:00am. Ferry services resumed around 9:00am as fog started disappearing after the sunrise.
According to the Bangla calendar, a two-month-long winter begins with the arrival of Paush, which will begin after five days. Magh, the month after Paush, is the coldest month.
However, a significant drop in temperature has already been noticed across the country. People in the northern districts have experienced as low as 10 degree Celsius.
