Vermicompost (earthworm) fertilizer production has received a huge response in Ramgarh Upazila. The fertilizer has been mastered by Kazi Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, an agricultural entrepreneur from Kaladeba area of Ramgarh Upazila in Khagrachhari , It is known that in 2018 some agricultural entrepreneurs started production of vermicompost (earthworm) fertilizer with low tenage. But Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad is the successful entrepreneur among all these agricultural entrepreneurs due to tireless work and careful attention.
Kazi Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, elder son of Kazi Mohammad Ilyas Hossain, a resident of Ward No. 7 Kaladeba area of Ramgarh Municipal
Council, started the production of this fertilizer with only 2 ring slabs in 2018 with the full cooperation of Ramgarh Agricultural
Extension Directorate. Gradually increased the scope of fertilizer production. 270 (Chowbachcha) rings are placed under a huge tin shed
in the backyard and under a canopy on the other side. The self-effort project which started with just 2 rings currently stands at 270 rings.
Earthworms are released into the house by mixing dung, vegetable scraps and banana tree pieces in each ring. Then the house is covered with chaat sacks. After covering like this for a month, vermicompost fertilizer is produced. About 3 tons of fertilizer is produced from the house in a month. Kazi Abul Kalam said that he did not sell commercially, but the rate at which the demand has increased, he wants to start commercially. Those who are selling commercially, they are selling this fertilizer at Tk 15 t per kg retail and Tk12 wholesale.
Meanwhile, earthworm fertilizer produced by Kazi Abul Kalam Azad is gradually becoming popular among local farmers. In different upazilas of Khagrachari district, farmers are cultivating the land by producing earthworm manure in their homes. Chemical fertilizers are expensive and harmful. That is why local farmers are now using vermicompost fertilizer on land. Few farmers also said that they are getting more profit with less cost.
Ramgarh Upazila Agriculture Officer agriculturist Mohammad Rashed Chowdhury said that farmers are being helped in producing the fertilizer to increse production with soil fertility .
Abul Kalam Azad is a successful entrepreneur among several entrepreneurs in Ramgarh. Many farmers are producing earthworm fertilizer for their own use. We will do our best to support the entrepreneurs as much as possible from the Department of Agriculture.
