The Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka yesterday fixed November 12 to pronounce the verdict in the Police Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Rahman murder case.
Judge Syed Ahmed of the tribunal fixed the date on completion of the
arguments, submitted on behalf of the prime accused, Oishee Rahman, who allegedly killed her parents in 2013. Oishee was produced in the court on Wednesday to witness the last session of argument in the case.
Referring to Mahfuzur Rahman’s brother Mashiur Rahman’s testimony, Oishee’s lawyer Faruk Ahmed argued that since Oishee was a minor when the murder took place, her trial must be held at a juvenile court instead of a general court, as per the law. Faruk further said, “Since she was drug addicted at the time, she should be acquitted as per Section 85 of the Penal Code.” Her other lawyers argued that the prosecution completely failed to prove the charges brought against Oishee and they sought acquittal of the accused.
Earlier on October 13, Oishee claimed that she had not killed her parents. In her written statement, she said the male police members who had interrogated her during remand had tortured her, which compelled her to make the confessional statement about the incident.
On October 7, the tribunal concluded recording the depositions of prosecution witnesses in the murder case. A total 39 out of 57 prosecution witnesses testified.
According to the case statement, the decomposed bodies of Mahfuzur and Swapna Rahman were found at their Chamelibagh residence on August 16, 2013.
Oishee surrendered to Paltan Police Station the following day. Later, police arrested their domestic help Khadiza Akhter Sumi and Oishee’s friends Jony and Rony.
Two charge-sheets were submitted on March 9 last year – one was against Oishee and her two friends, while the other against Sumi who was a juvenile at that time. Sumi’s trial has been going on at a juvenile court of Dhaka.
According to the charge-sheet, Oishee alone killed her parents while Jony instigated her and Rony gave her shelter after the incident. Sumi has been accused of assisting Oishee in concealing the dead bodies.
