Vegetable prices sky high despite ample supply

The brinjal is still being sold at Tk 100 per kg despite ample production, says a retailer, accusing the consumers’ useless demand for this vegetable in the month of Ramzan especially. A school teacher has said, when asked, there is no reason behind such an illogical price.
After visiting few kitchen markets of the Dhaka Metropolitan city, it was seen that a retailer was selling brinjal at Tk 80 to Tk 100. Since the beginning of Ramadan, the brinjal price jumped to the present level from Tk 20 to Tk 40.
While talking with traders about the brinjal’s unusual price, Karwan Bazar vegetable trader Md Bilal said, the demand for brinjal increases every year during Ramadan. This time there is no exception. Brinjal prices have risen due to increased demand. Our idea is that the price of brinjal will go down after Ramadan.
Not only brinjal, but bean is selling at Tk 100 to Tk 120 for per kg whereas few days ago, it was Tk 60.
A Rampura Bazar vegetable trader Jamsed Mia said, the bean’s season is over. The beans that are coming in the market now are specially cultivated. These beans are coming in small quantities in the market. Since there is less supply in the market, it is normal that the price will be higher.
Moreover, cucumber is being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 40 whereas it was at Tk 80 to Tk 100.
On the other hand, other vegetables price remained stable as Sajina is being sold Tk 60 to Tk 80 and tomato is selling at low price as per kg is being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 40 whereas one week before it was Tk 40 to Tk 50.
The onion sells at Tk 30 whereas one week before it was selling at Tk 40 and imported onion is being sold Tk 40 and earlier it was Tk 60 to Tk 65.
The bottle gourd was selling at Tk 50 to 60 at Karwan Bazar. Cauliflower, broccoli and cabbages were selling at Tk 40 to Tk 50 per piece based on its size and quality.
Pumpkin at Tk 70 per kg, bean seed at Tk 80 per kg, papaya at Tk 30 to Tk35 per kg, green chilli at Tk 80 to Tk 90 per kg, potato (new) at Tk15 to Tk 20, the local variety of newly-harvested a bit higher, carrot at Tk 50 to Tk 60 per kg based on size and quality, okra at Tk 80 per kg, ash-guard at Tk 70 to Tk 80 per piece and tomato at Tk40 to Tk50.
Leafy vegetables, such as spinach, were selling at Tk15 to Tk 20 per bundle, red spinach at Tk10 to Tk15, green spinach at Tk 20 per bundle and coriander leaves at Tk120 per kg.
In terms of poultry meat, the prices of broiler chicken Tk 170 to Tk 175 per kg, layer chicken is up Tk 10 to Tk 245 a kg, while the prices of Pakistani cock or golden chicken rose by Tk 10 to Tk 310 to Tk 340 per kg.
The egg is being sold previous price as per dozen farms at Tk 110.
Meanwhile, beef is selling for the usual price of Tk 650 per kg. The price of red meat saw an increase of Tk 50 in the last month and is now about Tk 100 higher than it was last year.
In the fish market, Rohit and Carp were sold at Tk 250-350 a kg, walking fish at Tk 500-600, Telapia and Pangas at Tk 150-170.
Besides, a Hilsha weighing one and a half kilogram is being sold at Tk 1,000-1200 per kg while smaller size at Tk 500-600 only, while shrimp at Tk 600-650 only. The cat fish was selling at Tk 400 to 450 at Baganbari, South Goran on Friday, taki mach at Tk 350, Papda at Tk 400 and boal mach at Tk 600 only.
