The prices of different winter vegetables have gone up by at least Tk 10 per kg in the city’s kitchen markets, as supply fell due to the ongoing devastating flood in different parts of the country.
The prices have been on the rise for the last few days as many farmers lost their produce because of rain and flooding, vendors said.
Soaring prices of daily essentials are hurting low and middle-income families in the capital as they find it increasingly hard to pay for the same basic essentials.
Many are struggling to collect foods for their families as a large portion of their income is going to the markets.
Visiting different kitchen markets on Friday,
this correspondent found that Barbati and Kakrol were selling at Tk 60 per kg, patal at Tk 40, Okra at Tk 30 per Kg, green banan at Tk 35-40 per four pieces and green papaya at Tk 35-40 per kg at the city’s Jatrabari market.
The price of onion has increased by Tk 15 per Kg and selling at Tk 50-55 per Kg, which was Tk 35 few days before.
Potato has also become costlier as the price of the essential item has increased by Tk 5 per Kg.
Onion trader Md Habibur Rahman said most of the local onions have gone into stock and some onions were damaged due to floods, resulted in the supply of onions in the market has decreased and the price has gone up.
The prices of eggplant, tomato, cucumber and carrot have also increased. The price of chilli has gone down at Baganbari, Southgoran.
The vendors blamed that the wholesalers have raised prices due to the shortage of some vegetables, leaving the consumers upset.
Fish prices are also on the rise. It has increased by Tk 40 to Tk 50 per kg.
Vendors said the floods have washed away fish ponds in various parts of the country, which has an inevitable effect on prices.
Cultivated Ruhit and Katla were selling at Tk 300 to Tk 350 per Kg. Shrimp, antlers and catfish were selling at Tk 600 to Tk 800 per kg. The price of hilsa is also going up and there is no sign of reduction of price in the fish market.
Meanwhile, the poultry market is returning to some relief by Tk 10 to Tk 15 per kg. Broiler chicken was selling at Tk 140, Layer at Tk 280 and Sonali variety at Tk 260 per Kg. The local variety chicken was selling at Tk 500 per kg.
The price of egg was fixed at Tk 120 per dozen, soybean oil at Tk 205 per litre and lentil pulse at Tk 140 per Kg.
