Staff Reporter :
The investigation committee of the Human Rights Commission formed a committee to investigate the incident of vanishing kidney of a patient at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), will submit its report by December.
The Human Rights Commission formed a two-member committee to investigate the incident. Committee members also spoke for several hours on Sunday with victim’s son Rafiq Sikder.
Al Mahmoud Faizul Kabir, Head of the Investigation Committee, said the matter is ‘very sensitive’. We are investigating the incident with utmost importance. We will come to conclusion after careful assessment of the incident.
The Report will be given by December, head of the Investigation added.
If necessary, all those who were involved, we will contact all of them, said the head of the investigation committee.
Meanwhile, when asked about the arrest of four accused doctors of BSMMU, Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mamun Aur Rashid told the New Nation that the victim’s son film director Rafiq Sikder filed the case last Friday. Police have launched an operation to arrest them.
But we couldn’t arrest them yet. Our efforts are on, OC added.
Earlier a murder case was filed against for surgeons including Professor Dr Habibur Rahman (Dulal) of the Department of Urology of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Friday two years after the death of a female patient following the removal of her two kidneys, instead of one.
Other accused are Assistant Professor Dr Faruque Hossain, Dr Mostafa Kamal and Dr Al Mamun.
Film director Rafique Sikder, son of the victim, filed the case. Police said they are trying to arrest the accused.
According to the case statement, Rafique Sikder admitted her mother Rowshan Ara to the Department of Urology of the BSMMU on July 1, 2018 with infection in a kidney of her.
After the treatment, she was released from the hospital. During the follow-up treatment, Rafique Sikder was told that it became necessary to remove his mother’s left kidney through surgical procedures. Later, he admitted his mother to the hospital and the left kidney was removed through operation on September 5.
As Rowshan Ara’s condition deteriorated, his son took her to a private hospital. After examination, the son learned that the right kidney of her mother had been vanished.
Though the accused urologist claimed during the operation that his mother’s right kidney was not functioning, he removed it silently and did not inform the attendant of the patient about it.
Rafique Sikder said that doctor Habibur Rahman confessed the crime and entered into a written agreement with them that he would do the kidney transplant of the victim at his own expense. But he has wasted time. On the other hand, he left his mother in a coma in the life support of ICU of BSMMU Hospital. His mother died there on the night of October 31.
