Waz Mahfil attacked : 12 hurt: UZ Vice Chairman elect Jamaat man kidnapped

The newly elected Upazila Vice Chairman of Chatkhil (Noakhali) Mohiuddin Hasan who is also a level Jamaat leader was attacked by some unidentified miscreants when he was returning after attending a Waz Mahfil, organised by Jamaat at Poddarbazar area on Thursday evening. Another person who was accompanying him was also injured in the attack. Besides, about a dozen of people who attended the Waz Mahfil were injured.
When the Waz Mahfil was in progress some
miscreants opened fire on the function from a place adjacent to the Mahfil venue. The attackers allegedly enjoy the blessing of a local UP chairman, eye witnesses told the media. The Waz Mahfil was foiled following the attack.
The attackers also set ablaze the microbus of Mohiuddin Hasan. He was immediately taken to a private clinic for treatment.
When contacted Officer in Charge of Chatkhil Ibrahim Khalil told The New Nation on Friday evening that he had met Mohiuddin after the incident. He however, failed to confirm whether he was still under treatment.
Unconfirmed sources said that he was kidnapped by the attackers and his whereabouts remains unknown till the time of filing the report on Friday night. When requested for telephone number of Mohiuddin Hasan by this reporter the Officer in Charge of Chatkhil did not oblige. He said that the attackers have snatched away his cell phone. When pressed for the cell phone number of the Upazila Vice Chairman the Officer in charge abruptly snapped the connection.
A tense situation was prevailing in the area following the incident. Meanwhile, Wahiduzzaman, Duty Officer of Duttapara police outpost confirming the incident told the media that the damaged micro bus of Mohiuddin Hasan has been recovered but the Upazila vice chairman could not be traced till Friday night. Additional forces have been deployed in the area to maintain peace, he said.
