UZ polls will be festive fair: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda hopes that coming Upazila election will be festive one.
The CEC said, the people of our country rejoice at polls time. They go to the polling stations singing, dancing and chirping. They line up with discipline to cast their votes stand in queue.
KM Nurul Huda said it to the Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers at Nirbachan Bhaban on Tuesday in a brief meet.
The CEC said, it is our culture that people feel interested to franchise in election. We witnessed it on television and read in the newspapers that there was long queue to wait for casting votes.
He advised the Returning Officers to study the upazila Parishad election rules and regulation properly.
The CEC instructed the officials to be sincere and honest. No negligence will be tolerated.
“Votes have their right to vote without any fear and obstacle” he added.
On the other hand, Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar said, the Upazila Council election is losing spirit as it is not being participatory.
“The elections will not be inclusive as the BNP isn’t taking part,” he said on Tuesday while briefing returning officers for the upcoming Upazila polls. “As a result this election is on the verge of losing spirit,” he added.
Talking about elections to the post of the Upazila chairman, who are contesting on political parties’ tickets, he said, “The truth is almost everyone who has been nominated will be elected uncontested.” Addressing the officials, Commissioner Talukdar said, “The polls will take place in par with the law and it must be ensured that the voters can exercise their franchises without a hitch.”
He warned that negligence on the part of returning and assistant returning officers would not be tolerated.
Election Commissioner Kabita Khanam, Brigadier General (retd.) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury and Rafiqul Islam, EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed also gave different directions to the Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officers.
