UZ Chairman lands in jail ahead of oath taking

Newly elected chairman and vice-chairman of Gaibandha’s Sundarganj Upazila were arrested from Rangpur, where they went to take oath on Monday.
The two, backed by Jamaat-e-Islami in the local polls, were arrested from in front of the divisional commissioner’s office over separate charges of murder, Sundarganj Police OC Mozammel Haque told bdnews24.com.
Chairman-elect Majedur Rahman is assistant secretary of Jamaat’s Gaibandha unit and Vice-chairman-elect Abu Sulaiman is assistant secretary of the party’s municipality unit,
said Jamaat’s District Secretary Md Abdul Karim. The OC said, Sulaiman was detained for his alleged involvement in the killing of three policemen at Sundarganj’s Bamundanga during the violence that broke out following the death sentence of Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee on February 28, 2013.
