Gazi Anowar/Abdul Alim :
The commuters are being annoyed with holes and cracks that have created untold sufferings on the Airport Road in city’s Uttara area following the lengthy construction and repairing works of Metro Rail project, and development sewerage and utility service lines.
The authorities are continuing such works without considering any alternative ways for the interests of the city dwellers.
The commuters, including pedestrians, are facing accidents almost everyday due to pits and cracks on the road.
People’s anguish has been mounted due to blocking of roads without prior notice for using alternative roads and streets.
Hundreds of vehicles have been seen to wait for hours to go to the destinations and thereby creating long tailback on the roads. In this circumstance, normal life of thousands of city dwellers is being seriously hampered as they cannot move freely on the roads due to a huge number of potholes.
Meanwhile, Airport Road from Nikunja to Abdullahpur has already been turned into dangerous for public.
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has been digging the streets in recent months in violation of their own regulations, which is the main reason of water logging and slow traffic movement, and increasing people’s sufferings.
Visiting different areas, including Uttara Model Town, Nikunja, Khilket, Kuril, Gulshan and Banani on Thursday it was seen that digging up of roads, lanes and by-lanes has begun.
Residents in DNCC area claimed that the state-run several organizations take up their routine development works, which require road digging almost every year around monsoon.
And most of the service providers used to start development works at the same place at the same time. They dig up the place several times for their individual projects instead of planning and coordinating their work.
Jakir Hossain, pedestrian of Nikunja, said, he did not understand why WASA has to dig roads for development work every year just when the monsoon starts.
“We cannot move comfortably due to mud on the road, and it gets worse when it rains,” he said.
They mentioned the names of service providing agencies such as Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Dhaka WASA), Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC), Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Ltd (BTCL) and DNCC.
“DNCC has been preparing more than 160 kilometer roads for renovation works,” Saidur Rahman, Executive Engineer (Civil) of the DNCC, told The New Nation on Thursday.
