Ustad Yakub Ali Khan to be honoured with ‘Nazrul Award’ on May 31

Renowned Nazrul singer, researcher and music director Ustad Yakub Ali Khan will be honoured with ‘Nazrul Award 2020,’ which will be handed over
at the Poet Sufia Kamal Auditorium
of the National Museum on May 31,
said a press release.
Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Trustee Board has decided to honour him with the award because of his contribution to the research on Nazrul Islam’s life, literature and music. While sharing his feelings to get the award Ustad Yakub Ali Khan said, “It has been five decades I am involving with Nazrul songs. During this long period of my career in music, I have devoted myself entirely to the promotion, dissemination, training and performance of Nazrul Sangeet as well as classical music. This is the first time Kabi Nazrul Institute is going to honour me with this prestigious award, I am proud to be bestowed.”
He also expressed his gratitude to his family and also said, “My family has a big contribution too, especially my wife and children. They were always there like a shadow with me on this journey. I dedicate this achievement to my family, my fans, and all my students. I respectfully recall all, who had contributions behind today’s Nazrul music practice in Bangladesh to where it is today.” Ustad Yakub Ali Khan also acknowledged the fact that is hard to become successful in the area of music. He said, “Although it is very difficult to become financially successful in mainstream or classical music.
It requires sacrifice, outstanding intelligence, and family support, I would hope that the young generations of music students will devote themselves more to the Nazrul genre of music.” Currently Ustad Yakub Ali Khan is the principal of Nazrul Institute and since 1981, he has been
performing on Bangladesh Betar and Television as a special Nazrul and
classical music artiste. Ustad Yakub Ali Khan was born at Nagarpur in Tangail.
The artiste started to learn music under Purnachandra Sutradhar in 1972.
After that, he took training under Prabir Kumar Chatterjee on Nazrul and classical music. Then he came to Dhaka in 1975 and studied music under Ustad Barin Majumder, Narayan Chandra Bosak, Sheikh Lutfar Rahman, and Khalid Hossain. For the last two decades, he has been performing as a judge for classical and Nazrul songs on BTV.
