Staff Reporter :
The Election Commission (EC) is thinking of using the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) in the coming 11th Parliamentary election after examining proper capability. For that, it needs change of the Representation of the People Order (RPO). All will be done by the Commission, said Election Commissioner Kabita Khanam.
She said it yesterday after a discussion with the journalists at the Commission’s head office, Agargoan.
Kabita Khanam said, Commission has completed all the preparations. The use of EVM needs amendment to the RPO. Commission will also have to give focus on the building capacity of the EVM. Without trained manpower, it is impossible to use EVM.
Without proper preparation, to buy EVM will be just waste of money.
How RPO will be changed and how the EVM will be used, there is necessity to discuss all these. EC is trying to reach a concrete decision about use of EVM, she added.
EC commissioner also discussed about the appointment of election related officers, such as returning officer, presiding officers, assistant presiding officers and polling officers. After Eid, EC will sit in a meeting. That time EC will widely discuss about this issue.
EC has no will to give registration to new political parties before Parliamentary election. A lot of applications have been submitted. Two parties’ applications are under consideration.
She said, the selection of polling centres has been completed. Forty thousand centres have primarily been selected. If there is any objection, we shall accept it, then hearing will be held. Yesterday was the last day to receive objection whether polling centres will be increased or decreased will be known later.
She also discussed about the unity of Commission. We have constitutional bindness to work together. There no room for individual issue.
