The United States will provide ‘specialized training’ to the Bangladesh police personnel to increase their capacity in a bid to fight narcotics problem and also to control law and order situation.
The assurance came when US Assistant Secretary of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs William R. Brownfield met senior officials of Bangladesh Police, including IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandakar, at Police Headquarters in the city on Sunday.
Brownfield highly praised the ‘professional role’ of Bangladesh Police in the UN Peace Keeping Mission.
“I assure you of US assistance for capacity building of Bangladesh Police. The US government will provide specialized training and other cooperation to Bangladesh Police in this regard,” Brownfield said in the meeting with top law enforcement officials.
IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandakar elaborated the plans saying that he was trying to transform the Bangladesh Police as a service oriented department instead of keeping it as a force only.
“We are determined to have a service-oriented police system in this country. However, the Bangladesh Police usually face challenge in some fields, including drug trafficking, cyber crime and technology-based investigation,” the IGP said. IGP also presented a crest to the US official.
DIG [Operations, Police Headquarters] Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, Additional DIG [Special Crime and Prosecution] Md Zahirul Islam Bhuiyan, AIG [Confidential] Mahfuzur Rahman and officials of US embassy in Dhaka were present at the meeting.
