A delegation, led by US Department of State’s Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Dr Sarah Sewall, arrives here on a two-day visit beginning on Wednesday to discuss security and human rights issues with Bangladesh.The delegation will meet government officials, civil society leaders and students to discuss issues ranging from security to human rights. “Bangladesh is an important partner and the people of both of our countries benefit when we work together on pressing global concerns such as security and countering violent extremism,” US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the US Embassy in Dhaka on Sunday.Prior to serving as the Under Secretary, Dr Sewall taught at the Harvard Kennedy School of government, where she served as Director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy and directed the Program on National Security and Human Rights.She has extensive experience partnering with the US armed forces around civilian security and served as the inaugural Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Assistance in the Clinton Administration. Before joining the executive branch, Dr Sewall served for six years as the Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to US Senate Majority Leader George J Mitchell.
