The United States has said they still want to see free, fair and credible elections in Bangladesh as the next national elections will be held in 2019.
“We still want to see free, fair, credible elections. We still want to see Bangladeshi citizens able to participate in a democratic process,” said John Kirby, spokesperson of the US Department of State, at a regular briefing in Washington DC on Wednesday.
The spokesperson made the remark when a questioner wanted to know about the current US position regarding Bangladesh’s election issue. John Kirby said they still want to see human rights is respected and freedom of expression and freedom of the press in Bangladesh as they want to see it elsewhere. “So we still have these very real concerns, and that hasn’t changed.”
BNP boycotted the last national election and later the U.S. advocated for a participatory election.
