The recovery of a bag with fake IED from the annex building of US embassy in Dhaka on December 2 made headlines.
Two youths supposedly threw a “black bag” at a security guard of the embassy following an altercation and ran away. Later, the bomb disposal unit of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit found a match box, a cup wrapped with black tape, some wire and a knife inside the bag.
Law enforcers on Wednesday said that the whole episode was staged by embassy security guard Zakir Hossain Mollah, who apparently did it for reward.
Seeking anonymity, an official of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said that the bag was kept there by the security guard himself.
“He wanted reward from the authorities,” the official said.
Earlier in 2015, Zakir received ‘Guard of the Year’ award.
Zakir has been sent to jail today after police produced him before a court showing him arrested under section 54.
According to police, law enforcers started looking at the footage of the closed circuit cameras installed at the embassy. In the footage, it was seen that a security guard opened the window of the guard’s room, removed the curtain and threw the bag away. Zakir was on duty there at that time. Later, during interrogation, Zakir admitted his involvement.
Zakir, who has been working at the US embassy for 17 years as an employee of a security agency, told police that he had hatched the plot, expecting reward. He had earlier recovered a cocktail from the embassy area during previous political unrest. He was awarded for this in 2015.
