US congress introduces resolution on 50th independence anniv of BD

The US House of Representatives has introduced a resolution commemorating the 50th anniversary of our independence recognizing leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his declaration of independence on March 26, 1971.
“Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared Bangladesh’s independence from West Pakistan on March 26, 1971,” the US Congress Resolution mentioned.
It also recognized courage of freedom fighters and subsequent nine-month long Bangladesh’s liberation war that led to displacing and killing millions of Bengalese .
The resolution (H. Res. 239) titled “Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s independence” has been introduced in the US House of Representatives on March 16 2021, according to a press release of Bangladesh mission in Washington DC received here on Friday.
It was tabled by congresswoman Alexandria Ocasion-Ortez, Democratic Representative from New York.
The resolution has been co-sponsored by Congressman Gregory Meeks, Chairman of the House of Foreign Affairs Committee; Congressman Rashida Tlaib and Congressman Jimmy Gomez, all from the US’s Democratic party.
The resolution has made particular reference to the statement of Senator Edward Kennedy made at the University of Dhaka on February 14, 1972 as US and Bangladesh’s “sharing love of freedom’.
Moreover, it also noted the ‘acceptance’ of Bangladesh of 7,00,000 Rohingyas in August 2017.
It specifically has expressed support for the principles of democratic governance to which the people of Bangladesh are committed and also recognized the contribution of Bangladesh for hosting refugees fleeing genocide in Myanmar.
