Successful implementation of the Urban Partnerships for Poverty Reduction (UPPR) project helped over 30,000 ultra poor slum families in improving their life standard and coming out of poverty in Rangpur.
The information was disclosed at the ‘Programme Exit Meeting with Community Leaders and Stakeholders’ at Rangpur City Corporation yesterday. The Policy and Programme Development for Accelerating Pro-poor Urbanization (PPDU) Initiation Plan with Rangpur City Corporation organised the meeting presided over by City Mayor Alhaj Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu. The Local Government and Engineering Department executed the 7-year term UPPR project through RCC at Taka 26 crore for extremely poor slum families through 85 Community Development Committees (CDCs) in nine Community Clusters in the city. The UK aid through the Department for International Development (DFID), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Government of Bangladesh funded the project to improve livelihood and life standard of extremely poor urban population, including distressed women and children. City Panel Mayor Golam Kabir Kajol narrated the successes achieved under the project in improving socioeconomic, livelihoods, health, hygiene, sanitation, nutrition and education status enhancing women and community empowerment. Executive Engineer of RCC Azam Ali, Nutrition Expert of UPPR project Abdul Baten Kian, CDC leader Joytsna Begum and Slum Development Officer of RCC Selim Mian, spoke among others. City Councilors, officials and employees involved in the implementation of the project, members of CDC Town Federations and community leaders, representatives of different organisations and some project beneficiaries participated in the meeting.
The City Mayor, also President of UPPR Town Project Board, narrated future strategies for reducing urban poverty and improving life standard of the poor slum families.
He expressed deep gratitude on behalf of RCC to the DFID and UNDP authorities for extending assistance for achieving success and sought their extended cooperation in various other possible forms.
