10 hour ordeal: Unpleasant but normal

The law and order situation in the capital on Saturday was normal even the country was plunged into nationwide power outage for nearly 10 hours caused by failure of national grid.
There was no report of untoward incidents such as snatching, mugging and robbery during the power outage in the city, however, the city dwellers had faced some unpleasant situation when they went to buy some essential commodities like candles and diesel.
Pieces of candles and diesel went higher than that of the normal rates following buying spree of by the consumers after the evening.
After spending an evening in the dark, most residents of the capital Dhaka, a city of more than 10 million people, got electricity back partially at around 9pm.
Hanufa Begum, a resident of Mirpur-10 in the city, told The New Nation yesterday, “I had passed my day without water and power amid hot. I hope that power will come at the evening. But when it did not come, to lighten my house I went to shop to buy candles and I was astonished as the shopkeeper asking me to pay Tk 20 for a candle instead of normal rate of Tk 5.”
Monir Hossain, a house owner of the city’s Gopibagh area, said, “I had to buy 10 liters of diesel to run generator for producing power. When I went to purchase diesel from a local petrol pump, the operator of the pump denied selling it to me.
Officials said, power was fully restored to all parts of Dhaka and the rest of the country by Sunday noon.
The country’s power grid was fully restored, and any further problems that may arise would be for ‘local reasons,’ State Minister for Power Nasrul Hamid told reporters at a press briefing on Sunday.
