Physical condition of Dinajpur’s Ghoraghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Wahida Khanam has improved, doctors said it at the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital (NINH) on Saturday.
“Her physical condition has improved. But she is not out of danger yet. We have to wait 72 hours more [till Sunday night]. We will review her condition on Monday morning,” said Professor Dr Zahed Hossain, member-secretary of the eight-member medical board formed for Wahida Khanam.
On Thursday night, doctors carried out a surgery on Wahida’s brain. She along with her father was critically injured in an attack by miscreants at her official residence in Ghoraghat upazilla in the early hours on that day.
On Saturday, Director General of Directorate General of Health Services Prof Dr ABM Khurshid Alam and Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Professor Kanak Kanti Barua visited Wahida at the hospital.”Wahida Khanam’s level of consciousness is normal. She can recognise everyone; has talked to everyone including her husband,” Professor Zahed Hossain said during a briefing in presence of the visiting guests.
He informed that the right side of Wahida is still paralysed.
“It is difficult to say when it [paralysed side] would improve; except this, her condition is well,” he added.
Before them, Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam also visited the UNO, according to NINH official.
Wahida’s father Omar Ali, who tried to save her and came under the attack, is undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
Three people have been arrested in connection with the attack so far.
Wahida’s brother Sheikh Farid Uddin filed a case against the unidentified accused at Ghoraghat police station on Thursday night.
Rozina Parvin, Officer-in-Charge of Ghoraghat Upazila Ansar and Village Defence Force, said four Ansar members were deployed on Friday to ensure the safety of the UNO family.
Meanwhile, a court in Dinajpur on Saturday placed Nabirul Islam and Santu Chandra on a seven-day remand in connection with the attack on UNO Wahida Khanam.
Wahida Khanam came under criminal attack at her official residence in the dead of night for allegedly resisting an attempted robbery.
Three of the five arrestees confessed to have carried out the attack and explained reasons for the same.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) picked them from various spots of Ghoraghat Upazila under Dinajpur on suspicion and quizzed them.
During interrogation, the trio said they entered the UNO’s house in a bid to commit burglary and hit her in the face of resistance.
Those who gave confessional statement are: Asadul Islam, son of Amzad Hossain from Sagarpur under Ghoraghat upazila, Santu Kumar Biswas, son of Khoka Chandra Biswas, and Md Nabirul Islam, son of Faraz Uddin from Biswanathpur. Santu and Asadul are painters.
