University or drug den?

DRUGS have almost spread its dreadful control over the students of Dhaka University (DU), a vernacular daily reported on Wednesday. The law enforcers recovered huge consignments of drugs from various residential halls of the university during the last couple of weeks. The last recovery was made on Sunday night at Hazi Muhammad Mohsin Hall of the university. Drugs are now sold in DU campus through advertising by affixing leaflets at walls. The leaflets call to buy various foreign wines like Vodka, Whisky, Redwines, Passport, Beer etc. on mobile phone numbers for safe supply of the needed brand. The teachers, parents, guardians, even the general students have expressed serious concern over the horrible situation, but surprisingly no measure has yet been taken by the DU authorities to contain the ‘Drug Syndicate’. The reason is very simple — the big fishes who are running such heinous drug business have a link with the power houses of the country. So, who dares to say anything in protest? Allegedly, the former and the present leaders of ruling party’s students’ wing are involved in the drug syndicate, said some arrestees who work for the leaders to operate the business in the university areas.  The latest craze of drugs in Dhaka University is taking Yaba. As it is less expensive and easy to carry, so it has spread very quickly and become most popular with the drug addicts. But hashish has not yet lost its charm and so does the Phensidile as well. Some worried teachers opined that a vested quarter is destroying the image of the ‘Oxford of East’ not just for business, but they carry the plan (willingly or not) to make the youths derailed and eventually merit less in the long run. The experts, therefore, put stress on the source of the drug supply to destroy for the sake of next generations who will not be crippled as victims of drug menace. As history says, Dhaka University was the best knowledge house and the breeding ground of the nation leaders who led the country in different movements from ‘save the language’ movement to ‘restoration of democracy’ but is now the victim of drug nuisance. So, to derail future movements as well the future of the country, there is a conspiracy hatched by destructive quarters from home and abroad to destroy the students first who are the best sons of the soil. And thus “University of Dhaka’ is their target number one to accomplish the ill design.  Our view is simple — the ‘drug menace’ must be contained and Dhaka University should get the priority to be freed from all kinds of illegal substances. Govt should take necessary measures for active vigilance in the borders from which drugs like Yaba, Phensidile are being flooded inside Bangladesh. No particular place or part of the country should be a safe haven for drug users, peddlers, traders or drug patrons who want to make the nation empty of meritorious leadership.
