Staff Reporter :
The university teachers on Thursday demanded the resignation of Narayanganj MP Salim Osman for forcing Shyamal Kanti Bhakta to sit ups-down holding ears on charge of making derogatory comments about Islam.
The teachers also threatened of tough movement if their demand was not met.
Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association (BUTA) organised the human chain in this connection at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla on the Dhaka University (DU) campus in the morning.
The leaders of the organisation also demanded arrest and trial of Selim Osman for taking law in his own hands. BUTA President Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed said, “The teachers are the assets of the country. Some people in the society misbehave with the teachers, while some others neglect them, which is not acceptable. The incident of Narayanganj was totally undesirable. We want justice. We want removal of Selim Osman from the Parliament. Otherwise, we will declare tougher programmes soon.”
On Friday, Shyamal was confined in a room by a group of angry people and forced to do squats holding his ears with both hands in presence of local lawmaker Selim Osman.
A video of the incident spread online making a section of educated class furious. Many empathised with the teacher by uploading pictures of themselves holding their ears. A committee was formed to look into the incident.
Later, the management committee of the school suspended Shyamal on Tuesday, but the Education Ministry restored him on Thursday.
