The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, (UNICEF) have announced to install 10,000 latrines in the makeshift Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar aiming to provide sanitation facilities for the forcibly displaced Myanmar citizens.
The New York-based humanitarian organisation signed a deal with the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief on Wednesday in this regard.
UNICEF country director for Bangladesh Edouard Beigbeder and joint secretary of Disaster Management and Relief Ministry Habibul Kabir inked the deal on behalf of their respective sides at the Secretariat.
Before the deal signing ceremony, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya said at least 35,000 latrines are needed to ensure hygienic sanitation facilities to the Rohingyas.
“We have already built around 7,800 latrines while UNICEF is building another 10,000. The rest will be built in association with the several humanitarian organisations,” Maya added while talking to journalists.
More than 520,000 Rohingyas, residents of the Rakhine State of Myanmar, have fled to Bangladesh during the recent influx triggered by a military crackdown since August 25.
