Md Rayhanul Islam :
The students of Dhaka University have been facing tremendous problem due to unhygienic atmosphere in the canteens where sub-standard foods are allegedly supplied almost regular-basis by the canteen-owners.
It’s a common phenomenon where students’ health matter is totally ignored. As a result, the students sometimes fall in sick that affects their usual academic life.
The university has 23 residential halls. Unhealthy and greasy foods are served in the canteens of these halls.
There are some restaurants in the surrounding areas of the campus, but food price in those restaurants is very high. Majority students are not capable to afford the expenses. So, the hall canteens are the only places where residential students take meals.
Mostahidur Rahman Moon, a third year residential student of DU’s Bijoy Ekattor Hall said that the hall administration never takes action against the dishonest canteen owners and the student leaders, who do not pay bills. At this, the canteen owners try to recover losses by serving sub-standard foods of lesser costs.
Khaleda Islam, Professor of Food and Nutrition Science Department, told The New Nation that according to a recent study, there is a direct link between brain and nutrition. The meals of canteen have no protein, no vitamin.
`The students cannot give attention to their study, they feel tired, their brain cannot work. They become weaker in both health and mind for taking unhygienic and musty food’, she added.
Meanwhile, in the first week of April, the canteen of the Zia Hall was closed for two days in protest that the BCL leaders did not pay bill for more than Tk one lakh. As a result, more than 1500 students fell in deep trouble. After the administration’s interference, the canteen opened again.
However, last year the BCL DU unit submitted a memorandum with 19 points demands to the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University. The food problem of the students was one of the main points of the memorandum.
On various occasions, the BCL DU unit assured that they would look after serving of the quality food in the residential hall canteens. But they are yet to take any step.
BCL DU unit President Abid Al Hasan told The New Nation that at first we will meet the canteen managers, hall provosts and general students to identify the problem. If there is any evidence of free eating by the BCL activists, we will fire them from the organization.
DU VC AAMS Arefine Siddique told The New Nation that the hall provosts look after the matter. We give subsidy to the DUCSU and TSC canteens. If hall provosts inform me about the serving of the substandard meals in the canteen, we will take step.
