DU Correspondent :
Professor Emeritus of Dhaka University (DU) Serajul Islam Chowdhury on Friday in a seminar said that quality of the country’s education system was decreasing, since the students are losing their interest in depth study because of unemployment problem.
“Students are always busy with preparing themselves for attending different competitive examinations including Bangladesh Civil Service for their jobs, rather than acquiring depth knowledge” he said.
He said it while speaking in a seminar titled “Position of Dhaka University in International standards and duties” in the Teacher-Student Centre of DU.
Dhaka University Journalists’ Association (DUJA) organised this seminar as the University failed to get position in world ranking in the recent University ranking of Times Higher Education (THE).
DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Akhtaruzzaman spoke as the chief guest, while Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury, DU Pro-VC (Administration) Professor Muhammad Samad, BTV Director Harun or Rashid, DU Proctor Professor Golam Rabbani and Professor Lutfor Rahman, former President of DUJA M M Jasim, former General Secretaries Lalon Mahmud, Forrukh Mahmud and Mahmudul Hasan Nayon, and DUCSU VP Nurul Haque Nur were present, among others, at the function.
DUJA President Rayhanul Islam Abir presided over the function and General Secretary Mahdi Al Mutasim Nibir conducted it.
The DUJA president made a proposal to solve this problem based on the different students’ bodies recommendations.
The proposal fixed some ways of thriving the educational quality, teachers- students-friendly atmosphere, amplifying budget for research and students welfare, exchanging ideas and views among international Universities.
They also pointed out few reasons of Dhaka University falling behind in the world ranking. These were recruitment of unfit teachers and biasness , absence of educational atmosphere for unfairness in politics, accommodation problems and lack of research and funding.
While speaking, the VC said, “the institution that makes university ranking do not get our data, that is why we are not included in the ranking. If they get our data, we will obviously get position in world ranking “.
“We take their proposal and will work as per the proposals presented at the seminar”, he added.
The office bearers of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), activists and leaders of different students’ organizations and members of DUJA, among others, were present in the seminar.
