Under construction vessel catches fire at dockyard

Adventure-6, a triple-deck under construction passenger launch almost prepared to start journey on Barisal-Dhaka-Barisal route before Eid-ul- Fitr Fitr, torched mysteriously at Nizam Shipping Line’s dockyard under Nalcity Upazila of Jhalakathi district on Tuesday night.
The fire started at 10 pm Tuesday from lower deck of the vessel while all labours and staff were engaged in praying Tarabi, said staff of the launch.
Adventure-5 and 6 were constructing speedily at Kirtankhola riverside of Dapdapia area to ply on Barisal-Dhaka- Barisal route of Eid Special Service.
Works of Adventure-5 already finished and 90 percent of Adventure-6 was completed.
Authority planned to ply both vessels experimentally from Friday next, said Humayun Kabir, one staff of Nizam Shipping Lines.
Seven units of fire brigade rushed to the spot quickly and extinguished the flames after two hours, said Shamim Ahsan Chowdhury, deputy director, fire brigade and civil defense, Barisal station.
He said seven units including fire fighter launch ‘Agni-Ghatak’ with a team of 40 fire fighters controlled the situation within two hours.
We a suggested higher authority to form a 3-member probe committee to find out the cause of instigating fire , assess the damages and legality of constructing such vessels on such type of dockyard, DD of Fire Brigade told.
Md. Nizamuddin, owner of the vessels, said fire totally burnt second and third decks, damaged machineries, AC panels, furniture, cabin decorations and other items worth Tk. 10/11 core.
‘We cannot talk whether it was sabotage or not without receiving the fire service report. However we will lodge a general diary about this incident’, owner of the vessels said.
Meanwhile Adventure-5 and 6, Catamaran type passenger carrier vessels, were constructed locally for day service on Barisal- Dhaka-Barisal route, were scheduled to start services from 20th Ramadan.
With 1200 passengers it could reach on destination within 5 hours, launch authority sources said.
