UNB, Dhaka :
The United Nations has decided to terminate a project titled ‘Strengthening Election Management in Bangladesh’ much earlier than the schedule citing reasons for withdrawal of funds by donors.
“With the withdrawal of donor funds to the project, however, the project will be terminated at the end of July 2015,” said an UN media note.
The UN has been supporting the electoral process in Bangladesh since 1995, most recently through the electoral assistance project ‘Strengthening Election Management in Bangladesh’ (SEMB) administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This project started in April 2012 and was initially scheduled to run until March 2016.
The SEMB contributed to strengthening the Election Commission through training in electoral management and introducing modern electoral practices, including a state-of-the-art voter registration system. UNDP, however, will continue to work on strengthening democratic governance in the country, the media note added.
