United Nations Bangladesh Office and Daffodil International University (DIU) has jointly celebrated Human Rights Day 2020 with the theme “Recover Better – Stand Up for Human Rights”. On this occasion, a discussion meeting question and answer session and cultural function was held on December 10, 2010 through the virtual platform. Ms. Nasima Begum, NDC, Chairman, National Human Rights Commission was present at the program as the chief guest. Mr. Sanjeeb Drong, General Secretary, Indigenous Forum and Ms. Huma Khan, Senior Human Rights Adviser, Office of the UN Resident Coordinator was present as the special guest at the program. Presided over by Prof Dr S. M. Mahbub Ul Haque Majumder, Vice Chancellor (In-charge) of DIU, the program also addressed by Mr. Zahid Hossain, Human Rights Officer, National Human Rights Commission. The whole program was conducted by Mr. Syed Mizanur Rahman, Director of Students’ Affairs, DIU.
While addressing as the chief guest Ms. Nasima Begum said, there are many misconceptions among the people about human rights. As many people think, human rights are just a matter of disappearance and murder.
Not really that. She also said that our declaration of independence contains human rights.
Human rights have also been given priority in the constitution. Even then, the incidence of human rights violations in the society is increasing day by day. Child rape and juvenile gang crime have risen alarmingly.
We have to be vocal about these issues now. She commented. We will have to ensure Human Rights- the right of people to live with dignity, right to education, health, freedom of expression, she added
At the end of the discussion session, the students of All Star Daffodil Club of Daffodil International University’s performed a play titled ‘Thushi’ by faculty of DIU Md. Khairul Islam ( Sujon Nazir)
