UGC welcomes Japanese proposal to manufacture stevia in Bangladesh

Japan agreed to manufacture stevia, a kind of botanical product alternative of sugar, in Bangladesh under university-industry collaboration programme to meet the deficit of country’s additional demand for sugar.
To this aim, a four-member Japanese delegation from Okayama University of Science led by its Professor Hiroki Hamada called on University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Dr AK Azad Chowdhury at his office here on Tuesday, said a UGC release.
The delegation wants to manufacture stevia in Bangladesh on a large scale under university-industry collaboration porgramme with Dhaka University through UGC, it said.
Stevia, a kind of sweetener and sugar substitute which contains 300 times sweetness of sugar and a negligible effect on blood glucose extracted from the leaves of the plant species (stevia rebaudiana).
The UGC chairman welcomed the proposal and assured the delegation of extending necessary cooperation in this regard.
Among others, UGC Member Professor Dr Abul Hashem and UGC Secretary Dr Md Khaled were present on the occasion.
