Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), an important educational institution of Northern region of the country its, Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah has denied the allegations brought against him holding Education Minister Dipu Moni responsible for the investigation.
He said, University Grants Commission (UGC) has prepared and submitted a fabricated report against me at the directive of Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni.
Kalimullah made the allegation at a press conference held at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity auditorium on Thursday. “I’ve come here today to disclose everything. I’m well aware of its consequences,” he said. “The inquiry committee made such a behaviour at her directive.”
He also questioned the integrity of the UGC. “I think, politics of Cumilla and Chandpur worked behind it, because both of us hail from the same region.”
Kalimullah said, “I work for 20-22 hours daily for the university, and take rest for only 2/3 hours.”
They are accusing me to save and rub out former VC Dr A.K.M Nur Un Nabi’s corruption. All kind of irregularities started during former VC’s tenure.
Prof Kalimullah said, during my time I tried to minimize that irregularities. And for that a group of people became angry with me, because I disliked their illegal interest.
Earlier, the UGC submitted its investigation report to the Education Ministry recommending legal actions against Kalimullah and several officials of Begum Rokeya University.
The UGC found the involvement of Kalimullah in irregularities and corruption in the construction of Sheikh Hasina Hall and Dr Wazed Research and Training Institute in the university being built under the Prime Minister’s special development project.
“The news reports on irregularities in the development project at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur published in different newspapers drew my attention. Since my joining at the Begum Rokeya University as the fourth vice-chancellor, I had to go through various challenges and difficulties. When the university is moving forward, such false and confusing news hiding the truth have appeared as shocking for the university family,” he said.
The press conference was attended by university registrar Abu Hena Mostofa Kamal, several engineers, a section of teachers, officials and employees.
On September 24 in 2019, a group of teachers of the university in a letter to the Education Minister brought 45 allegations against the vice-chancellor.
