University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked the public universities to enhance all kinds of academic fees.
“The administrations of public universities should increase tuition, hall, transport, admission and other fees. The UGC thinks that the increase of fees is logical. So, it should be done.”
The UGC said it in its annual report recently.
The UGC said that the expenditure is increasing day by day in the public
universities. But the authorities of these universities did not increase any fees. They do not have any headache about it. They can earn a very good amount of money enhancing fees.
“The university administrations maintain transport sector. But the fees, which are taken from the students, are not sufficient. Transportation fees should be increased,” the report said.
“The electricity expenditure is gradually increasing every year. In 2012-13 session, it was TK 38 crore and 54 lakh. It is now Tk 42 crore and 82 lakh. That is why the hall fees should be increased,” the report said.
UGC Chairman Professor Dr A K Azad Chowdhury told The New Nation that the UGC recommended for increase of all kinds of fees. The expenditures in every sector increased, but the fees did not increase. So it is high time to enhance the fees to ensure quality education in public universities, he said.
“The family condition of most of the students of public universities is good. It will not be difficult if the authorities increase some fees,” UGC chairman said.
Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor A A M S Arefin Siddique said that the DU administration increases fees in every year in a rational way. The DU tries to enhance its internal income. It would take decision about the matter in its syndicate meeting.
