Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Tuesday urged the political leaders to search for an understanding to overcome the ongoing political crisis.
TIB also expressed its concern over the prevailing situation in the country as the existing politics has become violent and inhuman.
The TIB Executive Director, Dr Iftekharuzzaman, made the call in a statement here on Tuesday.
“Good governance and democracy are now under risk. It should be overcome soon,” Dr Iftekhar said.
He said, “The fundamental rights of women, children, youths and general people are violated atrociously due to the power based politics of the two top political parties in the country. The rights of easy movement and even, the natural death of the people are being abused.”
“When one portion wants to remain in power, another part wants to come to power defying the people’s will. Accountability and rule of law of basic institutions, including law enforcing agencies, are being deteriorated. These are the threat for democracy and good governance,” added Dr Iftekhar.
He further said that rally, procession, human chain and other peaceful programme are the democratic rights of all citizens and organizations. “Violent programmes put the people’s life under threat in the name of movement. Abusing of laws by police, BGB and RAB also make the politics aggressive and undemocratic.”
Dr Iftekhar said, “Mutual understanding between the two top political leaders (Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia) is needed in this crucial situation. The keys to restore the crisis are in the hands of these two leaders. The good behaviour among the leaders of the two top political parties is also essential. It is high time to probe that the political parties are doing the politics for the wellbeing of the people.”
“The existing political crisis is not only creating problems for good governance but also making the democratic institutions ineffective. For this, the general people, the young generation and the students are loosing interest in politics.”
He called for mutual understanding among the political parties, particularly the two big parties. He also laid stress on observing the political programmes peacefully.
