The second round of Spain’s Copa del Rey knockout competition brought surprises on Tuesday, with two top flight teams knocked out by rivals from the third tier of the Spanish game.
Segunda B side Cordoba condemned Getafe to their second Cup exit against lower league rivals in as many seasons, after Willy Ledesma’s sixth-minute header decided the game.
Getafe rested key players, but although the entry of first-team regulars Mauri Arambarri, Marc Cururella and Francisco Portillo at the start of the second half saw them pin Cordoba back, the home side defended their lead with a bit of luck after Arambarri’s late header bounced off the bar.
However, the biggest shock of the day came when fellow third-tier side Ibiza thrashed Celta Vigo 5-2.
Celta were 3-0 down at half-time and 4-0 behind after 60 minutes after goals from Sergio Castel and Molina sandwiched a brace from Javi Perez.
Although Santi Mina and Jordan Holsgrove gave Celta a glimmer of hope, Angel Rodado netted Ibiza’s fifth goal in injury-time to see the match out.
Villarreal made hard work of their visit to Zamora on a frosty pitch, and although they went 2-0 up thanks to Carlos Bacca and Yeremi Pino, Carlos Ramos’ 46th minute goal for Zamora made the top flight side sweat until Fernando Nino scored a third in the 72nd minute and Raba added a late fourth.
