Two suspected Rohingya drug traders and a murder accused were killed in reported gunfights with the law enforcing agencies in Cox’s Bazar and Mymensingh districts early Thursday.
In Cox’s Bazar, two Rohingyas, suspected of being drug traders, were killed in a gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) near the Ulubonia point of the Naf river in Whykong union of Teknaf upazila.
The deceased are Md Saker, 22, from Ukhiya’s Kutupalong Rohingya refugee camp, and Nurul Alam, 30, from Muchni camp in Teknaf, said Teknaf BGB-2 Deputy Commander Major Shariful Islam Jomaddar.
Receiving an information, that some drug traders would be smuggling a consignment of Yaba inside Bangladesh across the Naf river, a BGB team conducted a drive in the area, the BGB official said.
At this, the drug traders opened fire at the BGB force, which forced them to strike back in self-defence, triggering the gunfight. Later, BGB officials retrieved two bodies from the crime scene and sent them to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy, he said.
They also recovered 50,000 Yaba pills and some weapons from the spot.
In Mymensingh, a man accused of murder was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Chakua Daria intersection in Gafargaon upazila.
The deceased is Ekhlas Uddin, 32, son of Nurul Islam from Chakua village. He was wanted in two murder cases – the latest one was for killing an auto-rickshaw driver last month.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 1:30am. As soon as police reached the area, Ekhlas and his accomplices hurled brickbats and fired gunshots, triggering a gunfight.
Ekhlas was caught in the line of fire and sustained a gunshot wound. Later, he was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, Police said.
