Two were killed on road accident including a pregnant women at Rajshahi’s Gudagari area as a CNG auto-rickshaw collided with a running truck leaving the woman instantly dead on the spot.
In another incident one was killed when his motor cycle hit a Dhaka bound running bus on the highway at Debhata Upazi of Satkhira district. Wednesday was the worst hit day of road accidents in recent time involving 52 dead all over the country as they were travelling in Dhaka bound buses after Eid vacationing. At Gaibandha 18 people alone died in a road crash. The government has formed an 11-member probe body to investigate the crash which also left 28 others injured.
But many believe such probe body is just an eye wash to side track the accident occurring on road and highway almost every day. The fact is that if anarchy in the transport sector does not stop where bus owners run
unfit transport vehicles and drivers work overtime without sleep to mint extra money on the Eid season, the situation can never be tackled without bringing unruly drivers and bus owners under control. They are enjoying political impunity from being punished.
The probe body led by Shishir Kumar Roy, additional secretary (estate) Road Transport and Highways Division, has been asked submit the report within the next seven working days, said a circulation of the division on Sunday.
The body comprises of deputy commissioner (DC) of Gaibandha, deputy inspector general of police (highway), representatives of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), representatives of bus owners and workers, it said.
The investigators will ascertain the cause of the accident, trace out those responsible for it and suggest preventive measures to avert the recurrence of such accidents.
