Two people went missing after a lighter vessel with around 1,000 tonnes of scrap iron capsized when a foreign cargo vessel hit it at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port on Saturday.
Abdur Rahim, master of the lighter vessel, “Char Shyamal”; and Mohammad Motaleb, a sailor, were not found till last evening, said Mahbubur Rashid, executive director of Water Transport Cell (WTC), a private organisation coordinating the schedules of lighter vessels.
He said scraps are transferring to lighter ship ‘Char Shamayel’ from “MV New Legacy” which was anchored in the outer anchorage. During this period, another ship lost its control and hit the legacy ship while Char Shamayel also affected and sank around 11:07 am. The accident took place when Shanayel swallowed 400 scrapes, Mahabubur said adding that captains of the vessel save their life to get another vessel. Meanwhile, BSRM group imported a total 32 thousand 500 tons of scrapes and with the aim of anchoring the ‘MV New Legacy’ ship in the jetty, the port authority lessen its weight to transfer some scrapes to lighter vessel. Other eight crewmen of “Char Shyamal” were, however, rescued by the crewmen of other vessels, he added.
The vessel was heading towards Karnaphuli Ghat, said WTC sources.
