Non-navigability in dry season: Two launches stuck in Karkhana River , rescued after 6- hr

Two launches of Patuakhali- Dhaka route got stuck on a shoal of Karkhana River under Bakerganj Upazila of Barishal district causing immense sufferings to around 2,000 passengers on board.
The four-storey Dhaka-bound MV Sundarban-9 and MV Jamal Khan-5 started journey from Patuakhali Launch Ghats on 6 pm Friday night and was got stuck after one hours with around 2000 , said Yunus Husain, launch supervision of Sundarban-9 on early Saturday.
However, both of the launches reached to their final destination safely after delaying about 6 hours on Saturday late morning, launch sources added.
MV Jamal Khan-5 with some 900 passengers and MV Sundarban-9 with more than thousand passenger on board stuck on under water shoal, said Ajamal Huda Mithu, deputy director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), Barishal station.
BIWTC official claimed that the vessels got stuck on under water shoal as its masters failed to follow route safety-markings on the river in a foggy weather.
The launch was plying slowly in foggy weather but stuck in the under shoal due to loss of navigability of the river, acknowledged Saidur Rahman Rintu owner of the launches named Sundarban fleet and vice president of Launch Owner’s Association.
Yunus Hossain, supervisor of the water transport Sundarban-9, said navigation problem raised in this route as the BIWTC authority failed to do regular dredging of the river to maintain safe navigability, specially on dry winter season.
Sultana Begum, a passenger of MV Sundarban-9, blamed the launch was plying in foggy weather soon after starting journey without taking any precaution.
